Da Gama and his crew were pretending to be Muslim and the Sultan gave them pilots to help cross the Indian Ocean. Da Gama was found out by two Christian slaves in India. They noticed the religious symbols on their ships the Sao Gabriel and Sao Rafael. They were ordered to leave on March 10th. The two of the Muslim pilots that were on his ship, one fled and the other was held captive for giving bad directions.

a pilot be provided to him. Ahmas ibn Majid guided Da Gamas fleet to India starting on April 24th. They landed in India on May 21st. While in Calicut, DaGama traded inferior goods and the leader of Calicut had heard of DaGamas exploits and were viewed as no more than pirates.
