Survey: One thing most needed to precept 3rd & 4th year students - Faculty Development on OPP/OMT Faculty Development for both MD and DO's with emphasis on what Osteopathic Principles are, the Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine and how they should be incorporated in everyday work experiences. Train MD preceptors and re-train DO preceptors on OPP.

Faculty development and mandates that DO faculty complete this and that students receive this feedback on majority of clerkships Survey: One thing most needed to precept 3rd & 4th year students - Clear Expectations (remove N/A for CC#1) For DO preceptors, set forth an expectation that they need to mark something other than N/A on the student's evaluation

form. I think that the preceptor needs to be told before hand by the school faculty member that they need to have a discussion with the student about the DO philosophy during the evaluation. Remove the N/A from the evaluation form and be overt about the expectation to at least discuss OPP. Survey: One thing most needed to precept

3rd & 4th year students - Prepare students as OPP/OMT ambassadors Put the (onus) on the student to demonstrate integration of OPP during their clerkships. Teach the students to be pleasantly assertive in asking permission and volunteer OMM treatment for patients. Simply discuss it for as many patients as possible. 3rd/4th year students especially should be encouraged to perform an osteopathic structural exam and include this in patient

presentations. Survey: One thing most needed to precept 3rd & 4th year students Comments by MDs As an MD, it would help me rate at least the philosophy aspect if we had clear anchors of what observable behaviors I should look for.

I have not been trained in OMP. I try to encourage students to relate to all of the patient, not just diagnoses. OMP should be rightfully taught and encouraged by those trained in it, i.e. D.O.s. do not have them rotate with MD... Survey: One thing most needed to precept 3rd & 4th year students

Comments by Students Educate preceptors DO and MD of the value of students practicing OPP while on rotations. The preceptor needs to be toldto have a discussion with the student about the DO philosophy during the evaluation. Provide specialty/rotation specific osteopathic principle and manipulative techniques to 3rd and 4th year students before each rotation. Ask the preceptors to observe students performing OMM.
