EXTENDED DEFINITION ESSAY Mrs. Puder English 0300 0310 HCCS Katy Campus An Extended Definition Essay An Extended Definition Essay: Is an essay where the writer gives his personal definition of a term through

the thesis statement, and the body paragraphs of the essay prove the definition stated. Some methods of development to help define a term are: 1) History/Background Search the origin of the term, and illustrate it. 2) Narration illustrating the term through a short story. 3) Description describing what the term looks, sounds like, tastes like, feels like. 4) Illustration-Example use short or long examples to illustrate the term.

5) Classification/Category put the term into categories, and explain each term. 6) Comparison/Synonym explain how the term is like, similar to other terms like it. Use synonyms. 7) Contrast/Negation explain how the term is different from other like it.
