TECHNICAL SESSIONS The Best Kept Secret in the World AGN WORLD CONGRESS 2011 Turkey

18-20 September Who are Turks ??? Turks have a long background dating back to the 3rd millennia BC, when they lived as nomads in the great Chinese steppes and on

the Mongolian highlands. Historical written references to the Turks appear in Chinese records of about 200 BC, when Turks liberated themselves from the Chinese autonomy and moved towards the west to establish their own

Empires and States mainly within the intersection of 3 continents; Asia, Europe and Africa. Before the foundation of Republic of Turkey, there were 16 Turkish States. The rulers of these States were called mainly Tarkan, Tanhu, Kagan (Kaan),

Han (Khan), Yangu, Bey, Shah, Sultan, and so on. Generally the eldest son was appointed as the crown prince. In case the crown princes were too young, their uncles were enthroned until they grew up. The capital city of the ruler was called "Ordu". AGN WORLD CONGRESS Istanbul, Turkey, 18 20 September 2011

Page 23 The Turkish Republic is the 17th and the last of the Turkish States. October 29, 1923 is a fateful date in Turkish history. On that date, Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the liberator of his country, proclaimed the

Republic of Turkey. The new homogeneous nation-state stood in sharp contrast to the multi-ethnic Ottoman Empire out of whose ashes it arose. The dynasty and theocratic Ottoman system, with its Sultanate and Caliphate, thus came to an end. Atatrk's Turkey dedicated itself to the sovereignty of the national will - to the

creation of, in the President's words, "the state of the people ". Today the term Turk commonly refers to citizens of the Turkish Republic and represents a nation rather than an ethnic identity. AGN WORLD CONGRESS Istanbul, Turkey, 18 20 September 2011 TECHNICAL SESSIONS
