1. 2. 3. What makes a good mathematician? What do pupils find difficult in maths? What are the benefits of using games in maths? To know x5 multiplication facts SPLAT To order numbers

GUESS MY NUMBER GUESS MY NUMBER To add three digit numbers, to compare numbers TARGET 500 Everyone draw a blank addition grid Invite a pupil to choose a digit card Each person should write the digit somewhere on their own grid Repeat until 6 numbers have been chosen Find the total who is closest?

+ Which numbers are best where? TARGET 500 Make one set of digit cards for class: 9 1-9

1 2 5 6 3 4 7 8 PLENARY

Which game would be best to try with your class? How could these games be adapted for what you need to teach? COUNTDOWN Take three single digit cards to make a three digit target number. Write down the number and replace the cards (take the 0

card out now). Mix up large numbers on one row, and digit cards 1-10 on another two rows. Ask pupil(s) to choose 6 cards. Allow pupils 1 minute (adapt as needed) to calculate. Each number may only be used once. The four operations (+ x - ) can be used as many times as you want. The closer you get to the target, the more points you score. COUNTDOWN Score: 10 points for meeting target 7 points for being within five of the target (higher or lower) 5 points for being within ten of the target

(higher or lower) 0 COUNTDOWN Make large digit cards: 25, 50, 75, 100 1 - 10 10 9 50 25 1 2
