Order of Operations

Order of Operations SOL 7.3 Order of Operations When solving an equation, you must follow the correct order This order can be remembered by the word PEMDAS

PEMDAS P = Parentheses E = Exponents M and D = Multiplication and Division from left to right A and S = Addition and Subtraction from left to right Example

(5 x 2) 2 + 32 = Parentheses first : 10 2 + 32 = Then exponents: 10 2 + 9 =

Then multiplication and division: 5 + 9 = Then addition and subtraction: 14 Example: 4 x 5 + 24 (2+2)

P: 4 x 5 + 24 4 E: 4 x 5 + 16 4 M/D: 20 + 4 A/S: 24
